The Unijos was founded as a separate entity in October 1975 by the then-military administration of General Murtala Mohammed. Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi was the first Vice-Chancellor of Unijos. In October 1976, 575 students enrolled in the newly reformed University of Jos, which was divided into four faculties: Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Natural Sciences, and Medical Sciences.
