Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a federally funded university in the ancient city of Ile-Ife in the Nigerian state of Osun. The University of Ife was founded in 1961 by the regional government of Western Nigeria, led by late chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and classes began in October 1962. On May 12, 1987, the university was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987), the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, whose brainchild it was.
